Top Sushi

Top Sushi is a place nearby my campus which I had tried once before, but wasn’t too fond of its taste. However, this was when I made my visit about 3 years ago, so I decided to give it another chance.

Upon entry, the place was actually better renovated. I remember when I went to Top Sushi in my first year, the place looked quite run down and almost dirty. The tables and the set up of the restaurant was a lot better than how I remembered.

We were greeted by the service and led to a table for two, where we looked at the lunch menu. We both decided on lunch combinations, where we were each given Two Miso Soups and Salad. The salad was a bit watery and the sauce was definitely not authentic Japanese (it tasted like ranch), however the miso soup was tasty and was piping hot, so it was satisfying for the stomach.

Shortly afterwards, our sushi sets came to the table, and I was surprised (based on my previous experience with Top Sushi) how attractive the dishes were displayed. On a nice, black clay plate, we were presented with a beautiful array of sushi and colour, particularly on my boyfriend’s Rainbow Sushi Set.

The Rainbow Sushi Set had roughly 13 pieces of rolls – 6 of which were Spicy Salmon Rolls and the remainder were the Rainbow Rolls, consisting of a variety of salmon, white tuna, avocado and other fillings. My boyfriend claimed that it was probably one of the best sushi he had in the city, which was quite a statement to make!

At the bottom, we have my selection for lunch that day, which was the Combo Set A where I chose which sushi and maki I wanted to eat. I decided on Salmon Sushi and Unagi Maki to create my combo for lunch that day. I thought it was surprisingly tasty, considering my previous experience with Top Sushi was not too good. It was a pleasant surprise to discover how much this restaurant has improved, and when the upcoming school year resumes, perhaps I’ll be finding myself here again.
