The Varsity

Hidden at the back of Robarts Library, The Varsity is a small tucked-away Korean eatery which serves some inexpensive eats for all students alike. I’ve once heard it advertised to me from my brother back when I first entered university, but only had the chance to take a visit now, in my last year of university.

On one busy school day, my boyfriend and I took a visit to The Varsity and we were first greeted to a huge line of students waiting for food. It was quite small, only taking up a corner unit, yet the place was very popular indeed. It must be because all the menu items were under 10 dollars, and it was in the vicinity of campus.

We ordered our food, but there wasn’t any room to eat inside the place. However, I don’t recommend staying in since it was pretty crowded and the space didn’t really offer a sit in. Because we were close to campus, we were able to just make our way to Trinity College to eat there.

On the top, my partner had the Bulgolgi rice which was stir fried beef in a soy sauce marinade, served on rice. This satisfied his stomach quantity wise, and he seemed content with the taste of his lunch for the day. His lunch was also served with kimchi, which is a favourite side of many Korean dishes.

For myself, I had the Gyudon, which was rice topped simmered sliced beef with vegetables and glass noodles. The flavor was definitely there and it was very tasty. However, for me there was too much quantity and I had to get my partner to help me finish it. I can tell that the food was authentic though, and it was very flavorful indeed.

Overall, I can definitely see why students would enjoy coming to this small deli for food – the demographic seems to enjoy quick, cheap, Asian eats and Korean food is definitely a great comfort food for lunch in the midst of midterm season. If I found myself around Robarts again, I’ll know where to grab food!

Take a look at their menu and maybe you’ll be making your next visit here:
