North Poke

Poke has been a favourite of mine in the city, so it’s inevitable that foodie utopia would continue trips exploring all the trendy poke stops in Toronto! One afternoon, I decided to make a stop to North Poke – a Kensington Market location nearby my university in order to satisfy not only my craving for poke, but also my craving for a new blog post for foodie utopia!

Upon arrival to North Poke, I was surprisingly impressed with the interior, particularly because it was screaming Hawaiian. You can see in the pictures that they had ukuleles hanging on the walls, along with artwork of pineapples, “Aloha” signs and  hanging leis. It was a really relaxing “hang loose” environment and really made me feel like I was going to get the authentic Hawaiian poke right in the city of Toronto. 

Shortly after arriving inside, I was greeted by the staff who were really friendly, they referred me to the menu displayed on the wall showcasing their most famous selections. I placed my order, paid and took my item to go – since I wanted to eat on campus that day. The process of getting my food happened in a matter of minutes, so service was really professional and I had gotten my lunch in good time.

Once I made it onto campus, I opened my lunch bag and I was greeted by this beautiful, simple packaging of my poke. I had ordered the Waimea poke bowl which had salmon, togarashi mayo, tobiko, sesame, green onions, red onions, fried shallots,  and edamame. It was such a pleasant dish and I could tell the taste was there. However, upon further bites I realized it was leaning more to the spicy side, perhaps because of the togarashi mayo on the salmon. As a result, for me personally the dish became less appetizing. 

Regardless of this, I was able to appreciate the taste of the dish and how others would definitely enjoy poke from North Poke. I think next time I make my visit to North Poke, I’ll need to either request for them not to make it spicy, or choose one of their non-spicy items. My next visit will probably be for the Hawaii Classic, which had sesame shoyu marinade, nori, cucumber, ahi tuna, green onions,fried shallots, and toasted sesame. I think I’ll be safe from spicy if I go with this option!
