Buk Chang Song Soon Tofu, located around Christie station in Toronto, was a venture taken one sunny afternoon with a friend who had wanted to take me to an interesting, traditional Korean restaurant for Foodie Utopia. Wish granted, we made our commute to Buk Chang to try their famous tofu.
The surrounding area almost felt like we teleport-ed to Korea – and I can testify to that making a recent visit to South Korea myself. Much of the area was catered to everything Korean, not just the restaurants, – which made sense because it is Koreantown! Buk Chang was found right at a little corner near Christie station, so it was a convenient subway ride to the place.
We entered the restaurant and it was truly traditional Korean because they served us chilled water in a unique Korean bottle that I’ve recognized from my travels there, as well as the famous cutlery of metal chopsticks and spoons. It was definitely needed because it was a pretty hot day, so we had a chance to cool off and order our food from their easy-to-read menu.
The waiter came out in a matter of minutes with our side dishes which came alongside our tofu – which consisted a variety of kimchi, bean sprouts, eggs, and nuts. The bean sprouts were my favourite, and my company thoroughly enjoyed the kimchi. As we dined a bit on the sides, our selections of tofu came out, boiling hot right in sight and fresh to eat!
My Selection: Combination Soon Tofu (Beef, Shrimp, Mussels) with Hot Stone Rice
The Combination Soon Tofu seemed like a favourite of the customers at Buk Chang – given it was on the top of the menu and it had all my favourites (beef, shrimp and mussels). I got this dish Mild (since you could request how spicy you wanted your dish) and it was very tasty indeed! The tofu was soft and absorbed a lot of the savory flavors of the broth, and the beef and shrimp packed some of their own unique flavors which added to the dish as well. The mussels were perfectly cooked and added a nice seafood flavor to my dining experience, so foodie lovers that have a love for seafood, this dish could be for you!
Company’s Selection: Kimchi Soon Tofu (Kimchi, Beef, Pork) with Hot Stone Rice
My lunch company ordered the Kimchi Soon Tofu at the spicy level – it’s what he always ordered when he comes to Buk Chang (or if not, he said he would order what I got!). On his account, it was very filling, and it’s a favourite for all spicy lovers alike. From the looks of the dish, it looked very appetizing indeed!
I have always wanted to explore Koreatown, but never had the pleasure of going due to my tight schedules. Luckily for just starting the school semester and an eager foodie adventurer, the excursion to Buk Chang was a success! I would definitely come back again, if I feel like Korean cuisine and want a quick, filling and reasonably priced meal.
